We’ve all heard it before, “Let it go!” Sometimes, that’s easier said than done, right? Often we let go, but quickly reclaim whatever it is we’re holding onto. We keep thinking about it, worrying about it, or trying to control it … and it just doesn’t seem to work.

I recently noticed a winter tree outside of my window. One single leaf was still dangling in the wind … determined to hold on tight, despite its season to let go. It was an opportunity for my own reflection.

Why am I holding on to things that I cannot change, or no longer need in my life?

What makes us cling to some things, and so easily let go of others?

In this series of blog posts, we’re going to explore all the areas of our lives where we may be holding onto things that hold us back from being our best and living the life of our dreams.

What are you holding onto that has long since passed its season?

We’re off and running into the New Year. Before we focus on all of our new goals and resolutions, perhaps we should also take inventory of what we need to let go of, so there’s room for all that good stuff we want to add to our lives in 2013!

As you consider what you may need to let go of, ask yourself these questions:

  • Who or what do I currently have in my life that drains my energy?
  • What things do I have that no longer contribute to my overall well-being?
  • Where do I have excess in my life?

Here are a few areas to look at:

  • Relationships
  • Household Clutter
  • Paperwork
  • Responsibilities
  • Commitments

As you think about letting go, you can learn a lot about yourself, your beliefs, your fears, and what you get attached to and why.

As yourself the following 3 questions about each item you want to let go of:

  • What does this mean to me, and why is it important?

This will tell you what you value.

  • What will I no longer have if I let it go? This will tell you what you are attached to.
  • What will be the worst thing that could happen if I let this go right now? This will tell      you what outcome you are afraid of, and exposes your fear.

Are you ready? Let’s start letting go of whatever holds us back and drains us of our time and energy. Just think how freeing life would be. And just in case you find an objection, I want to remind you that letting go does not mean you no longer care about something or someone.

Often, it is in letting go that you are finally free to care.

Every day, find something that has served its purpose (tangible or not), and let it go. There are many areas of our lives where we can find something to let go of. Some are harder than others, but give it a try. The emotional clearing it provides will be amazing.

In my next series of blog posts I’ll share some of the hardest things I’ve had to let go of, and what happened once I did. Until then, what are some things you’re still holding onto that you’d like to let go of this year? I’d love to hear from you!

Blessings,

Jenny
